Her hair has a long white streak from where it grows over a scar made by a Klingon Batleth. On the right side of her face, she has a stylized tattoo of a fishing spear that also serves to highlight and conceal another scar, made by d'k tagh slash across her temple.

Her entire upper right arm and chest is consumed in a very elaborate tattoo with an ocean warrior theme and she's begun to have another major tattoo starting on her left thigh that she has worked on whenever she has time. She wears her heritage openly.

Personality & Traits

General Overview Maia's loyalty to the Terran Empire has never been in doubt, at least to herself and most of those who have served aboard ships with her, however she has had to try to earn that trust from those who are quick to believe her to be a blood traitor. She wears her heritage and lives her life as she believes a modern Maori would, never backing down from a fight that she believes she can win. She finds herself constantly having to prove herself because of her great grandfather's reputation from the past. Getting past her outer defensive layer is tough, but once you gain her friendship, Maia will do anything, give anything to help you.

Maia was a direct witness to The Shattering, being on Earth Spacedock recovering from injuries when the planet came apart. She was watching her homeland of New Zealand pass underneath Spacedock when it seemed the Earth opened and swallowed it seemingly whole with her entire family.

[more to come]

Personal History Maia was born to a pair of civilians, not out of choice, but because they had been forbidden to join the Imperial Fleet, at least from the Swan side of the family. The Mehuara family was a traditional Maori clan that espoused living with the land and the extended family had a fierce tradition of warriorship. Maia, being the eldest of the eventual five children of Fletcher and Riina, had long since decided that she'd wanted to be a part of the Imperial Fleet and had embraced the traditions that her uncles and aunts and to a smaller degree her mother had grown up as a part of. She also listened with rapt attention to stories from her Great Grandfather Benedict Swan and his stories of serving the 'Old' Terran Empire and even the Emperor himself. Aged 110 when Maia was only 5 years old and rapidly growing senile from all appearances, his stories of the Empire only solidified Maia's desire to serve. He passed away when Maia was only 10 years old.

At age of 12, Maia announced her desire to join the Imperial Fleet, beginning her entry into Maori warrior tradition to train up and obtaining her first tattoo when she turned 13, a traditional runic symbol on her neckline. She started playing Rugby in school and then joined school's Parrises Squares team, rapidly becoming her team lead and known for her hard hits and speed across the field. She knew she would never become a star athlete, despite gaining skill and popularity in school.

Applying for early admission into the Imperial Academy when she was sixteen (for entry at 17), Maia's application was rejected within hours of submission. Reluctantly, Fletcher Swan reached out to some of the people his grandfather had known that were still in the Imperial service and after several of them pulled strings, Maia was accepted to the Imperial Academy and threw her all into it. Despite the Academy Instructors treating her with more suspicion than she knew how to handle, Maia graduated with some of the most mediocre grades of her class, although she was certain that she'd scored higher in her exams than her transcripts showed.

Out of the Academy, Maia was assigned to the Klingon Border aboard the old and not-fully-upgraded Miranda-class ISS Falchion on picket patrol; Essentially a ship out there to give warning to any incursion before being destroyed. Falchion skirmished with encroaching Klingons on a tour of duty until early 2388, when the ship was called to colony of Valos in response to Klingon attack. In a fast and furious space combat, Falchion destroyed two of the three Birds of Prey while sustaining damage until the third ship conceded defeat and left, abandoning the warriors that had invaded the colony world. Lieutenant (jg) Maia Swan was one of over 150 personnel sent down to root out these warriors, all of whom fought to the death, taking 126 of Falchion's crew with them to the afterlife. Maia herself was severely wounded, with a scalp wound that would never heal properly, causing a white streak of hair to grow along the scarring. Another slash across her temple wasn't healed properly, but the worst of her injuries had included a stab to the abdomen that ruptured a kidney and a strike to the leg that nearly severed it.

Upon return to Earth, Falchion was treated as a Fleet Flagship in a ceremony that saw the entire surviving crew and most of the dead honored beyond belief. All except Maia, whenever it could be avoided. Out of the remaining 73 officers and crew of the ship, 72 were promoted, several dozen of the dead posthumously promoted. But not Maia. After the ceremony presided over by one of the Lords of Terra, she was unceremoniously dumped into the medical wing of Earth Starbase for treatment and subsequent reassignment. It was due to this that Maia witnessed The Shattering in person, watching as her home islands of New Zealand were seemingly swallowed by the planet.

[Second Assignment] Maia volunteered to join new ship to help bring traitors to justice as Assistant Chief on ISS Templar. Recalled to Starbase 83 after suspicions of treasonous tendancies (stemming from Benedict), cleared of all charges after a year of investigation, but not overwhelmingly.

[third assignment] Sent out on ISS Charybdis to suppress a breakaway colony far away from Earth. Charybdis sustained significant damage and returned to Earth after being ambushed by mercenaries.

[ISS Vengeance] Asked for by name? Sent as a punishment out of suspicion from being investigated? Not sure yet.
